Organic Yellow Split Peas

Organic Yellow Split Peas by Hatton Hill Organic. Organically grown, harvested and dried in Slovakia. Packed in the UK.

Split peas are a terrific source of plant-based protein. They're low in fat, and a good source of folate, iron, potassium and fibre. "But what can you do with them," we hear you ask.

Obviously, one answer to that question is soup. After all, who doesn't like a hearty vegetable soup (perhaps with a little bacon or ham to really set it off)? And, in fact, there are endless numbers of recipes for variations on split pea soup. But our organic yellow split peas are even more versatile than you may think.

Split peas are an inexpensive and delicious ingredient, and unlike other pulses such as chickpeas and dried beans, they don't need to be pre-soaked or pre-cooked, meaning that you can whip up dishes using them in no time flat. How about a delicious yellow split pea curry or dal if you're hankering for a bit of healthy Indian cuisine? Or why not whizz your cooked split peas up in a blender with a little organic extra-virgin olive oil and a few spices to make a creamy, hummus-like dip for raw vegetables, crackers and bread? Toss our cooked split peas into salads and casseroles, press them into burger patties, or, if you're feeling in the mood for a nutritious snack, soak them, dry them and then fry them in a little oil and seasoning (start with sea salt and branch out into chilli, cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic, smoked paprika, rosemary, thyme and curry powder) for a crunchy bite that goes down a treat with a glass of wine, beer or other beverages.
