Organic Pecan Halves

Organic Pecan Halves by Hatton Hill Organic. Organically grown, harvested and dried in Peru. Packed in the UK.

Pecan nuts come from a species of hickory tree that's native to the southern United States and northern Mexico. They have long been regarded as a delicacy by Native Americans, and these days they're immensely popular in the US, thanks to their slightly sweet, buttery flavour and mildly floral, foresty aroma.

Apart from being absolutely delicious and incredibly versatile, pecans contain more antioxidants than any other tree nut, and they're packed with vitamins and minerals such as manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium.

Probably the best-known dish that uses these fabulous nuts is pecan pie, for which every true fan has their own special recipe, but the range of uses for pecan nuts in sweet treats is limited only by your imagination. Try our organic pecan halves candied (coat them in a mix of butter, sugar, cinnamon and allspice and roast them gently in the oven), bake them into biscuits, breads, brownies, cakes, muffins and tarts, grind them up coarsely to top cheesecakes and other dessert delights, try combining them with pistachios to make your own special baklava, chop them roughly and add them to recipes for fudge, caramel and other naughty-but-nice indulgences, top sticky buns and pastries with them... We could go on...

Pecans are also a wonderful ingredient in savoury dishes. Use them either whole or chopped to top any number of entrées and main courses, such as maple sauce pork chops, soups and casseroles, and almost any salad you feel like creating. Crust fish, chicken or meat with them prior to cooking, give them some extra snacky zing by roasting them with a mix of spices such as chilli, salt and a little oil, chop them into stuffings for roasted vegetables (the earthy flavour of mushrooms pairs particularly well with pecans' lovely taste and texture), try whipping up a pecan pesto with kale, parmesan cheese and garlic, or, to give your breakfast cereal a delicious, nutritious boost, just toss a handful of our pecan halves into it.
