Native to the Mediterranean region and northern Africa, cumin has been a prized spice for millennia, having even been used by the ancient Egyptians variously as a seasoning, for medicinal purposes, and for mummifying the dead. It’s a highly aromatic spice, related closely to fennel and caraway, with a warm, earthy flavour that at the same time has a slight but distinct citrusy bite to it. It is used in cuisines worldwide but is particularly prominent in Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian and Latin American cooking.
PURE, PREMIUM PRODUCT: Hatton Hill Organic’s ground cumin is produced from selected cumin seeds that are carefully cultivated, harvested, dried and ground in India. Its distinctive, delicious aroma and flavour come thanks to the high volatile oil content in the seeds from which it is produced. Our ground cumin is somewhat spicy, but its spiciness is a rich warmth, unlike the fiery heat of chilli peppers.
USES: Cumin is frequently used to take the edge off the heat of fiery chillis and sauces, but its aromatic, earthy qualities really come into their own when the spice is used as a mainstay flavouring in dishes such as curries, Moroccan tagine, Latin American soups and stews, and Middle Eastern dishes including hummus and slow-roasted chicken. It’s at home in many, if not most, South Asian-style curries, but equally versatile in a wide range of vegetable, meat and seafood dishes. Try grilled spicy lamb burgers, curried cumin potatoes, slow-cooked chicken tortilla soup, cumin-accented baby back ribs, grilled vegetable penne with cumin, roasted cauliflower with cumin and turmeric, and cumin-fennel rubbed salmon. Those are just a few of the almost endless culinary possibilities opened up this most versatile of spices!
