Organic Cumin Seeds by Hatton Hill Organic. Organically grown, harvested and dried in India. Packed in the UK.

The cumin plant, a member of the parsley family, is native to the eastern Mediterranean region and western Asia. Its seeds have been used in cuisine and medicinally for thousands of years, even gaining mentions in the Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Ancient Roman author and naturalist Pliny the Elder, who compiled what's recognised as the world's first encyclopaedia, described cumin seeds as the best appetiser among all condiments.

Cumin seeds are harvested by hand, and are a central ingredient in the cuisines of the Middle Eastern and the Indian subcontinent. They're also commonly found in Latin American cooking, among other culinary traditions. They have a warm, earthy flavour and aroma that's slightly nutty and citrusy, with a pleasing touch of sweetness and bitterness. The seeds' distinctive flavour and aroma are really brought to the fore by gently heating them up them in a dry skillet or with a little oil. They're incredibly rich in iron – a single teaspoon of seeds provides 20% of the recommended daily intake of this important mineral.

Our organic cumin seeds are enormously versatile. Use them whole or ground in meat, vegetable, fish and poultry dishes, in soups and sauces, in baked goods such as cakes, cookies, breads and flatbreads (Nigella Lawson makes a mean cumin seed cake), in falafel mix, in dips, as an ingredient in rubs and marinades (in Mexico, the seeds are an important ingredient in chilli powder), in rice dishes sich as pilafs, in stews and casseroles, in mixes for pickling vegetables, in salad dressings and vinaigrettes, in pakoras, in curries and dals... pretty much everything you can think of!
