The origins of cacao lie in Central and South America among the Aztec, Olmec and Maya peoples, by whom cacao beans were used as a medium of exchange starting more then 3,000 years ago. Today, for most people, cacao means one thing: chocolate! 

Hatton Hill Organic's organic raw cacao nibs are simply chopped-up cacao beans sourced from Peru, in their native region, and sweetened with yacon syrup – a naturally sweet syrup derived (without any chemicals, rather like maple syrup) from the roots of the yacon plant, another South American native that resembles a sweet potato.

In addition to being the foundation for chocolate, our organic raw cacao nibs have a range of uses in sweet and – it may surprise you – even some savoury dishes. 

But first, chocolate. Homemade chocolate is surprisingly easy to make, requiring only cacao nibs, cacao butter and something to sweeten the mix, such as honey or sugar (although thanks to the yacon in these cacao nibs, you won't need much, if any). Once you've got your mix in the pot, simply add whatever you like to give it texture and additional flavours – almonds, hazelnuts, raisins, coconut flakes, dried cherries and other dried fruit, liqueurs and essences, bacon... Yes, bacon. The only limit is your imagination!

Using cacao in the form of nibs opens up some intriguing possibilities beyond chocolate. Think of cacao nibs as nature's own ready-made chocolate chips and you've got the idea. Ice-cream, cookies, biscotti, chocolate sauce, a wide range of desserts, coatings for truffles, fudge, homemade chocolate liqueurs... you name it! 

Before you start wondering whether or not all of this apparent indulgence isn't quite in line with a healthy lifestyle, it's important to note that cacao is loaded with minerals such as potassium, antioxidants and B vitamins, and to be reminded that our organic raw cacao nibs with yacon are 100% natural.
