Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are one of the earliest legumes (beans and pulses) to be farmed, having been cultivated more than 10,000 years ago. They’re a staple ingredient in Mediterranean, Indian and East African cuisine, and have become a kitchen cupboard essential throughout much of the world.

USES: It’s tempting to think of hummus and falafel as the best use of chickpeas, but the humble chickpea is so versatile that it can take its place at the top table with some of the tastiest and healthy ingredients anywhere. Our chickpeas add substance and a lovely, nutty flavour to an enormous variety of salads, they’re superb in stews and soups, they’re brilliant mashed up with a little olive oil and seasoning for bruschetta, they’re delicious as dals and curries, they’re terrific for setting off and adding a nutty note to tomato sauces, they’re simple and stunning as a side dish with just a little olive oil, lemon, seasoning and garnish, and they’re fabulous in frittatas. Go plant-based and mash them up into patties for burgers and vegetable balls, fry them up as fritters and more. The culinary creativity that this lovely legume can inspire is limited only by the imagination.

Pro tip: Cooking our organic chickpeas from scratch will give them immeasurably more depth of flavour than using pre-cooked, canned beans, so it's worth putting in just that extra little bit of effort!
