Originating in southern Asia, southern Europe and North Africa, nigella seeds – also known as black cumin and black caraway – are a member of the buttercup family. They boast a slightly smoky aroma reminiscent of black pepper, and a flavour to match, with notes of onion and oregano. They’re commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine in a variety of ways.

USES: Hatton Hill Organic’s nigella seeds are a versatile addition to any kitchen, and are especially at home in Indian, Turkish, Iranian and North African cuisines. They’re a winning ingredient when dry-roasted and added to curries, vegetable dishes and dals, and can be used in other lentil or pulse dishes and soups. They pair tastily with butternut, in addition to pepping up recipes for Indian naan, bagels and other breads. Nigella seeds are also a terrific, crunchy, last-minute enhancement to salads of all kinds, adding texture alongside their smoky, peppery flavour.

Nigella sativa, is a flowering plant native to Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Nigella, which has a peppery flavour, is used as a spice in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. It is consumed in powdered form and oil is obtained by squeezing the seeds. Nigella seeds contain calcium, iron, zinc, copper, thiamine, niacin, phosphorus and folic acid.

In recent years, nigella seeds, which are also used in oil and powdered form, are no longer preferred only to decorate foods such as pastry and pastry. It is also used as a spice in Turkish cuisine to flavour soups, salads and appetisers. It is not recommended to use nigella seed oil for frying. You can add it after making your meal. You can also add black cumin oil to drinks such as smoothies, lattes and tea. It is recommended to consume 1 teaspoon of nigella seed. You can also consume nigella seed oil.
